Had an awesome Saturday morning flyfishing the beautiful Sydney Harbour. Big thanks and a shoutout to a local guide Ben Foster from the Endless Session that took us out on the water despite the poor weather forecast. It got quite windy and rainy at times, but we managed to find couple sheltered bays on the other side of the harbour that apparently held some fish. Just blind casting near the boats and markers for an hour wasn’t giving us too much of a result. So our guide decided to move on and look for some water surface activity nearby. Fortunately just around the corner from the spot we were blind fishing we noticed some birds circling around and instantly some splashes and then some more splashes appeared. Almost in no time those splashes turned into boiling water looking thing. And this is where madness starts – birds and fish go after baitfish, fishermen go after fish, wind knots go after fishermen and so on. It didn’t take too long to land our first specimen of the day which was a pretty angry tailor for my mate Dan. That toothy critter gave a decent bend to his 8weight that’s for sure. Then he landed a Kahawai (Australian Salmon that probably gets a name form the way it tends to keep jumping out of the water when hooked), and then more and more fish got reeled in by a both of us. By the end of the session we managed to land a so called Sydney Harbour Grand Slam – 3 different species on fly. We actually landed 5 species which were Kingfish, Australian Salmon, Bonito, Tailor and of course a Yakka (yes that counts as well). So overall a pretty damned good day on the water catching up with an old friend, hooking some fish and sharing a few laughs. Does Saturday mornings can get any better than this?
