Eucumbene river – Take Two

Considering pretty reasonable success I had in my previous trip, I thought we’ll sneak another quick one in just before the season closes to get the last trout fix. Forecast was clear – heavy snow above 2000m. I thought we’re pretty okay with the rivers running through lower areas than that. Gosh I was wrong. Even 20-30km before our destination we were already greeted with strong winds and patches of fresh snow in the bush, and in some areas even on the road. We continued making our way to the campsite and it wasn’t looking all that bad on the first day. We had a campfire going, some tunes playing in the background and a warm dinner kept our spirits up that tomorrow will be a day when we gonna catch trout of the lifetime. Waking up in the morning it was quite an experience. Broken car awning, bent tent poles, everything covered in layer of thick snow. Crazy. Went for a walk along the river, but just to get to the river we almost needed snowshoes as walking anything further than 50meters was a pretty tough going. Blazing wind made casting impossible – tangle after tangle. River was running high and murky, pools that we would normally fish were literally unfishable. After battling snow, wind and cold for couple of hours we decided to call it quits and head back home as this was too much to handle. Not all trips work out as you plan them. Oh well, there’s always the next one to be looking forward to.
